UPEI student union president Rob Livingstone wants the government to honour a scholarship promise. (CBC)The student union at the University of Prince Edward Island is calling on the province to make good on its promise of a $2,000 scholarship for students currently in their fourth year of study.
Student union president Rob Livingstone said the George Coles University Graduate Scholarship was part of the Liberal election platform last fall, and students are wondering when their money will come in.
Rob Livingstone said they are worried government will delay bringing in the scholarship.
“It seemed quite clear that it would be for the graduating class of 2012. I would assume that they would have thought this is when they would be able to take advantage of that,” he said.
“It could be the difference between kind of getting off to a good start into your career or having to wait a little bit to pay an extra $2,000 off on your student loan. So, I think we'd be very happy to see that it would be going into effect this year.”
Livingstone said government officials have told the student union they are reviewing their timeline.
Advanced Learning Minister Allen Roach said the scholarship will be awarded this year. (CBC)Advanced Learning Minister Allen Roach said eligible fourth-year students at UPEI will get their money this year.
"The government is committed to the campaign promise for the George Coles bursary,” Roach told CBC News Wednesday.
"Staff is meeting with the University of P.E.I. to go over fine details and we expect to be able to make an announcement once those details are all ironed out."
