Charlottetown police are investigating a series of drive-by paintball shootings.

Police said two men in a dark-coloured Volkswagen Golf drove through the city Wednesday night shooting paintballs at businesses and homes all over the city.

"I walked out this morning and found this mess on the door. And I realized someone had done something against the law," said Sheila Coulter.

Some customers waiting outside Razzy's Roadhouse for a cab became the target of a drive-by.

"Some young fellas drove by last night and were shooting a paintball gun at them. A couple of the girls got hit, got paint on their outfits. Another girl got hit in the wrist there and stuff," said Darin McAree, general manager of Razzy's Road House.

In one case, someone walking a dog was hit. That person wasn't injured.

"If one of them had got shot in the eye, that could've led to some very serious incidents," McAree said.

Police are treating this as a serious matter.

"When you have someone firing a paintball gun, you have a projectile that has a certain amount of velocity that potentially can cause harm and injury — personal injury to someone who is walking or somebody that could be in a home, standing behind a window, and the projectile could shatter the window, that sort of thing," said deputy police chief Richard Collins.

"When these paintball guns are being used under normal circumstances, people wear protective clothing for a reason and that is to avoid injury. So this is reckless and potentially could harm someone and cause serious injury."

Collins said possible charges range from public mischief to assault causing bodily harm or assault with a weapon.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to call Charlottetown Police.

"It's too bad that kind of thing goes on," McAree said. "Young fellas got nothing better to do I guess."
