The mayor of Montague is upset the province has not set aside money in the capital budget for the expansion of Montague Intermediate school.

Richard Collins says the students and staff have had the expansion plans delayed several times already, and they have waited long enough.

“I'm very disappointed,” he said. “We were promised this two years ago, and a promise is a promise, and it should be kept because there is a major need for extra space at M.I.S.

The music room at the school is overcrowded and students have to go to the abandoned high school next door for industrial arts.

“They need the space and they need it now, and waiting is not the right thing to be doing,” Collins said.

The opposition also brought up the school during question period today in the legislature.

The capital budget was introduced on Nov. 2.

Education minister Alan McIsaac says his deputy has talked with staff at the school and the department recognizes an expansion is needed.

McIsaac says the government was hoping there would be money left over from the high school construction project that could be dedicated to the intermediate school, but there weren't enough funds.

The minister has not committed to a timeline but says the department is looking for money to do the project.
