RCMP on P.E.I. say the driver who hit a motorcycle with his van on Saturday, killing a female passenger, then left the scene failed a breathalyzer test after he was arrested.
Police confirm the deceased motorcycle passenger was 38-year-old Stacy Cheverie of Eglington.
The unnamed driver of the motorcycle, Cheverie's husband, is still in the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax in serious condition.
Cheverie died when she and her husband were hit by a white van that failed to stop at the "T" intersection of Peakes Road and St. Patricks Road. Police say the motorcycle driver hit the brakes but could not stop in time.
"Given the trees … in the area, there was no way for the motorcycle driver to see the van coming," Sgt. Andrew Blackadar said in an email to CBC News.
RCMP say the 72-year-old male driver stopped and got out of his van, and after looking at the injured people got back in the vehicle and drove away.
Witnesses at the scene provided police with a description of the van and the suspect driver. Police arrested the man at his home, located about a kilometre from the crash site.
Police say the driver is still in custody after he failed a breathalyzer test on Saturday. His van has been seized.
