Occupy Wall Street will mark its first event on Prince Edward Island on Saturday.
The movement started in New York last month. A group set themselves up in Zuccotti Park to protest economic inequality and corporate greed. Occupations of business districts spread across the United States, and this Saturday groups across Canada are holding events.
Occupy PEI set up a Facebook page last week, and early Thursday afternoon had close to 200 fans. Charlottetown's event is being organized by Holland College student Marlee Cameron.
"Travelling across the country, I've seen so many people down and out," Cameron told CBC News.
"I don't think that it's right that in a country where we have so much that only a few people should benefit from all our resources that we have."
Saturday afternoon's event will be in the park next to Province House. Cameron said it would be the first of a series of rallies.
Cameron wants to draw attention to issues such as poverty, student loan access, labour concerns and big bank profits.
This first P.E.I. event will be held in conjunction with protests and rallies being held in every province in Canada and more than 1,000 worldwide.
