The province is ready to start construction on the new Spring Park Elementary School to replace the building that was closed because of mould issues.

The old structure was demolished three weeks ago and the province is now looking for a contractor to put in the new school's foundation.

Foster Millar, project manager with P.E.I.'s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, said plans call for extra measures to make it a mould-free school.

"What we will do with the design of the new building is that the floor of the building will be probably two- to two-and-a-half feet above what we would call the level of the grass that was around the old school, so that we can get slope drainage away from the building, so you don't have a damp area," said Millar.

Millar said the Charlottetown building will be almost twice as large as the old school.

The department is hoping to have work completed by early 2013.

The construction is part of a $17.4-million provincial plan announced in June to deal with water infiltration problems at more than a dozen P.E.I. schools.

Meanwhile, Spring Park parents will have an orientation of St. Jean's and Birchwood schools Thursday afternoon. Students will be going to these schools while the new Spring Park building is under construction.
