Ontario police say three people from Prince Edward Island were among the victims in an identity theft case.
PEI residents were among the victims of an Ontario-based credit card fraud. Fraud investigators said they found dozens of credit cards and tens of thousands of dollars in merchandise bought illegally with those cards, during a raid in Brampton, Ont. earlier this week.
According to Durham Regional Police, two females made large purchases of gift cards using credit cards at a Toronto-area department store last month. The store employees contacted police after becoming suspicious of the purchases.
An investigation revealed that the legitimate credit card holders, used to purchase the gift cards in Pickering, Ont. lived in British Columbia and had never been to Ontario. The cardholders confirmed they were victims of identity theft.
Police also found that two females had multiple Ontario driver's licences under false names. The investigation led to a Brampton residence which had also been purchased under a false name.
Police raided the home northwest of Toronto on Aug. 10 and seized credit cards, thousands of dollars in property obtained by the fraud including appliances, electronics, gift cards as well as the credit profiles of multiple victims of identity theft from Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Ontario and British Columbia.
Police also seized four vehicles including a 2010 Honda Pilot, a 2009 Honda Pilot, a 2002 Dodge Caravan and a 2002 Honda Accord.
Three women from Brampton, ranging in age from 32 years old to 39 years old, face multiple charges.
