All rural P.E.I. mailboxes are being reviewed for safety concerns, says Canada Post.

"We've had more than 130 of our employees involved in traffic accidents delivering mail on the rural routes in Canada," said Denise Corra, Canada Post spokeswoman. "And very tragically, three have died in traffic accidents related to rural safety."

But Sharlena Ward, a woman in a wheelchair in Western P.E.I., worries she's about to lose her rural home delivery, having recently received a letter from Canada Post saying her mailbox in Howlan is unsafe. She's being told to move the box back from the road, but that would place it in a ditch.

Ward said she's been told she might soon have to get her mail from a post office or community mailbox. She said that would be an added inconvenience to her life.

"For me, it's just a bummer because it's not good," said Ward.

Corra said Canada Post will work with each resident identified as having unsafe mailboxes. And she said in certain special situations, mail could still be delivered to a home, but it would be weekly, not daily.
