A 38-year-old Charlottetown woman faces four charges in connection with money missing from two non-profit groups—the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture and the P.E.I. Agriculture Sector Council.

Police say Karolyn Mae Tweedy worked for both organizations and had access to financial documents such as cheques.

"We received a call from the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture. They were doing a yearly audit and discovered some discrepancies. As a result of that we launched an investigation and we have laid four charges in total,"said Gary McGuigan, deputy chief of police.

McGuigan said two charges were laid in connection with the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture and two with the P.E.I. Agriculture Sector Council Inc.—in both cases, one charge each for uttering forged documents, and one charge for fraud each.

McGuigan said in both cases the thefts were over $5,000.

"It's a significant amount of money, it's extremely unfortunate, but it's not going to put us into any immediate peril or jeopardy when the processes are concluded, we will do what we can to recoup all of the losses," said Bertha Campbell, president of the P.E.I. Federation of Agriculture.

Tweedy will appear in court on May 19 to enter a plea.
