A Stanhope couple is putting together a group to try to save the Covehead lighthouse. P.E.I. Lighthouse Society/Canadian Coast GuardAn Island couple is spearheading a community group to take over the Covehead lighthouse.
The federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans announced last year P.E.I. lighthouses would be decommissioned and said that community groups have first dibs to take them over.
Pat and Keith Notman of Stanhope said losing the lighthouse would be a huge blow to the community. Now they're in the beginning stages of setting up a community group.
"We live on the North Shore and we live right around the corner from the lighthouse, so for us it's home and, you know, safe haven. I'm sure a lot of fishers in the area feel the same way," said Notman.
They have until May 2012 to submit their proposal to DFO before the lighthouse is sold on the public market.
