A P.E.I. couple escaped from their burning home in Cape Wolfe early Tuesday morning after being alerted by highway employees who were working in the area.
'The garage itself was pretty much on the ground and the fire was working its way into the bungalow.'— Fire Chief Ron Phillips
O' Leary Fire Department Chief Ron Phillips said the call came in at around 5 a.m.
"A highway crew was inspecting the highways and drove by the house, noticed it was on fire, stopped, had to get the couple living there out of bed. And shortly thereafter the smoke detector did go off but it hadn't gone off at that point," said Phillips.
"It was a bungalow style house with an attached garage, and the garage was fully involved… the garage itself was pretty much on the ground and the fire was working its way into the bungalow."
There is extensive damage. The home was insured.
Provincial Fire Marshal Dave Blacquiere said the fire was likely caused by rodents chewing on electrical cords.
