The alumni association of the University of Prince Edward Island has posted an online petition asking for public consultation on the proposed degree-granting legislation in the province.

The petition asks that there be debate about the measure and what is at stake for the university. The alumni association said it would like the government to reconsider the legislation and look at experiences of other provinces.

On Thursday, Progressive Conservative Leader Olive Crane told Liberal Premier Robert Ghiz that Islanders should be consulted before major changes are made to higher education.

The degree proposal and petition follow an announcement earlier this month that Halifax-based developer Richard Homburg is pitching a plan for a new university on P.E.I.

The new university would focus on research and professional training in real estate.

Currently, UPEI is the province's only degree-granting institution, although Maritime Christian College offers a few limited degrees.

The association's petition said the proposed legislation would affect Islanders for generations to come.
