The family of a 55-year-old woman who died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital is suing the doctors who cared for her as well as the hospital.

Faye Carter was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for bowel surgery in October 2008. She was dead two weeks later.

Carter's family claims she died because of poor medical care and is suing three doctors involved in her surgeries and the hospital itself.

The family said they tried to talk to doctors and hospital staff about what happened, but they didn't get the answers they were looking for and that's why they're suing.

The family said the doctors should have identified and treated the problems that developed faster and should have consulted with other experts.

The QEH conducted an internal review after Carter died and concluded a nursing shortage and lack of beds played a role.

The hospital also hired an Ontario doctor to do an external review.

Carter's daughter-in-law Rachel Jones said the family did meet with hospital officials in September, but didn't get a copy of the external review.

The doctors have 20 days to file a defence, while the hospital has about four months.
