"I really think it's going to put the city corporation on a completely new direction," Lee told CBC News Monday.

Recently residents were asked what they want their city to look like 100 years from now. Overwhelmingly, they said they wanted a greener place to live. The Integrated Community Sustainability Standing Committee will take charge of making those eco- friendly changes.

"One of the issues is a water conservation program. LED lighting for our traffic lights, for street lighting," said Lee.

"City vehicles, are they hybrid models? What's good for the environment?"

The programs will cost money, but the new committee doesn't yet have a budget. Lee said its program costs will likely be absorbed by the other departments.

New committee chair Rob Lantz said it's not just about quick fixes, it's about creating a long-term vision. To help with that, the city will hire a sustainability officer to help focus on larger issues, such as attracting people to the downtown.

"If you want families to live in downtown, you've got to have amenities and services," said Lantz.

"We have to have a plan to make that a goal in the future."

Lee said the new committee will working with all other departments, and has been put in place to make sure everyone is working together.

The committee's first meeting will be next week.
