In a bid to prove they are the world's best potato peelers, who else would Prince Edward Islanders have to dethrone but Idaho spud scalpers?

Skilled potato peelers from across the Island will be trying to break a Guinness World Record this September that's currently held by that other region that also renowned for its tubers. The goal: most potatoes peeled by five people in 45 minutes.

Qualifying "peel off" competitions are being held at fairs and exhibitions across the island this summer. The best peelers will come together for the "Great Peel Off" on Sept. 10 at Victoria-by-the-Sea, P.E.I.

Lucie Newson, the event's co-ordinator, says competitors must peel with a standard kitchen knife, such as a paring knife, or with a standard potato peeler. The record is 484 kilograms of potatoes in 45 minutes. Newson said that works out to about 4.7 potatoes a minute.

The feat is a promotion for the Red Sands Shore Potato Fest.
