There's a new festival coming to Prince Edward Island – one focused on the province's most famous tuber.

The Red Sands Potato Fest will take place in Victoria this September.

"We thought the potato was a natural fit because of the amount of potatoes that are grown within the South Shore region," said festival organizer Bill Kendrick. "We felt that while the O'Leary Potato Blossom Festival does a wonderful job of the festival that it has, we wanted to focus more on the culinary aspect of the potato."

The goal is to get people thinking beyond the typical mashed or baked variety of potato dishes. The Red Sands Potato Fest will showcase various ways to whip up spuds; newcomers to the Island will also show how potatoes are prepared in their homelands.

Children will have the chance to take part in potato sack races.

The potato fest feeds into the province's efforts to showcase P.E.I.'s culinary offerings as a tourism draw. The festival will take place Sept. 10-12.
