Seven environmental projects on Prince Edward Island will get a boost from new funding, Federal Environment Minister Jim Prentice announced Saturday.

Prentice outlined nearly $142,000 of support to local actions aimed at reducing pollution, improving air and water quality and protecting wildlife and natural habitats.

The announcement was made in Charlottetown to coincide with World Environment Day.

The money will come from the EcoAction Community Funding Program and will help groups such as Ducks Unlimited Canada and the Environmental Coalition of Prince Edward Island.

"Each of these projects will protect the environment for future generations, which goes to the very heart of the EcoAction program," Prentice said at the announcement.

The selected projects include initiatives to restore local watersheds, protect the quantity and quality of groundwater, plant native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, and work with schools, landowners and construction companies to restore wetlands and habitat.
