Olive Crane has been the interim PC leader since 2007. (CBC) Olive Crane announced Thursday that she will run to become the leader of P.E.I.'s Progressive Conservative party.
Crane became the interim leader in 2007 when Pat Binns quit after the party was defeated in the provincial election that year.
Crane is stepping down as interim leader to commence her bid.
Speaking in Morell, Crane said it took her a long time to decide if she was going to run for the top job. She said Islanders have been calling her and urging her to run since the legislature closed last week.
"I'm a person that I think people can relate to. I'm very much a people person," she said. "So when I stopped and thought about it, I thought, why not? So today I made my announcement."
MLA Jim Bagnall will step up to become the Opposition leader for the Progressive Conservatives, but the party executive will decide who will be the next interim leader.
The leadership convention will be held on Oct. 2 at the University of Prince Edward Island.
There are now three declared candidates. The other two are Fred McCardle and Peter Lewellyn.
