A fire destroyed the Abram Village arena on Sunday.
(Angela MacIvor/CBC)The fire that destroyed the arena in Abram Village on Sunday was accidental, P.E.I.'s deputy provincial fire marshal ruled Wednesday.
"We have determined that the fire originated on the second floor, in the northwest corner of the building, in a storage room," David Rossiter said.
"And we've ruled the cause to be an electrical fault within that room."
Rossiter said his investigation into the fire at the Evangeline Recreation Centre was greatly helped by a number of eyewitnesses.
Volunteer firefighters from eight communities responded to the fire, and their efforts have been credited with preventing the fire from spreading to nearby homes. The blaze broke out around 9 a.m. last Sunday.
Plans are already in the works to replace the facility in the village, 30 kilometres northwest of Summerside.
Meanwhile the City of Summerside is offering assistance to Abram Village.
Mayor Basil Stewart said the city is willing to help any way it can, whether it be letting community groups use Summerside facilities for events, or with technical assistance for re-building the rink.
