The Cavendish Beach Music Festival wants to build a permanent stage in time for its big four-day concert in July featuring Keith Urban and Taylor Swift.

The proposed structure, however, could reach up to 21 metres — more than twice the height allowed by the resort municipality. Cavendish is the largest seasonal resort area on Prince Edward Island, and is famous for it beaches.

So the municipal council is taking the issue to a public meeting later this month.

Kathleen Hryckiw, who owns a campground next to the concert site, said she doesn't think a permanent stage would be an eyesore.

She said the temporary stage used at the Tim McGraw concert last summer didn't stick out.

"From our campground, you couldn't see it from over the trees," Hryckiw said. "You can just pick out the lights, and you couldn't even see it from the road."

George Clark-Dunning, one of the few year-round residents of Cavendish, lives just behind the concert site.

"It'll not interfere with any of our views. Certainly, from an architectural standpoint, though, the winds on the north shore can be pretty strong." he said.

"So, I would certainly hope that the designer of the stage takes into consideration that winds out here can blow at 100 km/hr to 120 km/hr."

A handful of cottages sit above the concert site, and a big stage could get in the way of their water views.

"I would imagine there's always going to be people who have concerns," Clark-Dunning said. "The important thing is the promoter for the concert is having these public meetings in conjunction with the resort municipality for people to voice their opinions."

Hryckiw said that if some compromises are needed, she'd support them. But she said a permanent stage is a must.

"If you want to get the people here, and the big names, you've got to have something to offer them," she said.

People will have until April 5 to bring any concerns to the municipal council. A final decision is expected sometime in April.
