The manager of two of P.E.I.'s Community Access Program (CAP) sites is pleased to hear the federal government will continue to fund the program.

CAP provides internet access and computer equipment to Islanders in 38 locations across the province.

Earlier this week, the federal government said it would stop funding sites within 25 km of a library, which would have affected all of P.E.I.'s CAP locations.

Some of the program's employees were told their jobs were finished at the end of March.

But Tuesday, Industry Minister Tony Clement blamed a communication error and pledged to keep the money in place until the end of March 2011.

It will be up to the program's employees and the province to educate the federal government on the popularity of CAP in P.E.I. to ensure continued funding, said Elizabeth Wilson, manager of the Afton and Cornwall sites.

"I have many users that come into Afton that come for specific programs or technical assistance and they have internet at home," said Wilson. "But they're still coming because some of them are older, they're novice computer users. They don't even know how to maintain their computers."

The program is still popular, said Wilson, even with a push to get high speed internet to rural Islanders.
