Charlotte Court, the oldest seniors rental housing building on P.E.I., is going to be replaced.

People living in Charlottetown residence have been complaining for months about the lack of repairs at the 45-year-old building, which is owned by the province. They say the floors are rotting under the carpet, walls are damaged, and exterior panels are missing.

Janice Sherry, minister responsible for seniors, announced Thursday the province plans to replace the building, which is on North River Road.

Cabinet has given the go ahead for the department to call for expressions of interest in the next couple of days from private contractors. Sherry said the government has been working for the past two years to get the money needed from the capital budget and the federal government.

The residents will be consulted about the construction plans.
