The Charlottetown police department says its new website, launched just a few days ago, has already paid off.

A 30-year-old city woman turned herself in after being contacted by friends who saw her picture on the force's website.

Sgt. Brad McConnell told CBC News a video of the woman had been posted on the site's Assist to Identify section.

"In this case, a woman was caught on videotape stealing from the liquor store on Queen Street," said McConnell.

"That woman actually turned herself in to the police department after she received calls at home from friends that had visited the page and seen her."

The woman has been charged with theft under $5,000.

McConnell said there have already been more than 10,000 hits on the website. He is hopeful the site will help solve more crimes.
