The University of Prince Edward Island has instituted a new policy on alcohol, and it could have an impact on a common campus tradition.

The university's board of governors recently voted unanimously in favour of the policy. Previously the school had relied on provincial regulations. The new policy outlines where alcohol is permitted, prohibits free alcohol, and states that UPEI can shut down an event if there are serious violations.

Other Maritime universities have had similar policies in place for as long as 25 years.

"It's time that UPEI did something like that," UPEI student Julia MacKenna told CBC News.

While MacKenna supports the new plan, she is concerned about one aspect of it: a prohibition on advertising events that promote excessive drinking. That may include pub crawls, where students plan to go to several bars in one night as a group.

"The pub crawls that they have here are like a really good way to get people to know each other," she said.

"All the departments do their own."

Other students have suggested the rules are not strict enough. They wanted a requirement for non-UPEI students to be signed in at the student-run pub, The Wave. The student union said no to that idea, feeling it would discourage too many customers.

Student Union President Tim Cullen said he's happy with the alcohol policy. The university declined to comment on it.
