Dave Rashed and Ron Switzer of Haywire check out the concert stage. (CBC) A benefit concert for Haiti featuring some of P.E.I.'s most popular artists has quickly come together for the last weekend in January.
The concert will headline 1980s phenomenon Haywire and 10 other groups, and will come together with volunteer efforts from across the province. The Historic Charlottetown Seaport Building is providing the space, airlines and hotels are donating services for musicians coming in from out of town, Moosehead and Pepsi are helping out with the bar, which will be run by a local Lion's Club.
"Moosehead Breweries, and Pepsi Bottling, they're helping us out immensely. All the Parkdale-Sherwood members will be bartending," said Lions Club member Paul Gauthier.
"And yes, everything's all volunteered."
Haywire member Dave Rashed is one of the concert organizers.
"Islanders, we have good hearts here, and I think we just felt like we should just step up and do something," said Rashed.
Band mate Ron Switzer, currently the manager of the Seaport Building, is also helping to put the show together.
"It's going be a real treat, to get to play in this facility," said Switzer.
"I work here every day and I see other acts play here, but to get the opportunity to actually play here is pretty exciting."
Other acts lined up so far are:
- Richard Wood
- Gordon Belsher
- Cynthia MacLeod
- Meaghan Blanchard
- The Meds
- Grass Mountain Hobos
- Teresa Doyle
- Ninth Hour
- Sunday Punch
- Macbeth
The building can hold well over 1,000 people and all of the ticket sales, at $10 each will go directly to the Canadian Red Cross.
"I think its going to be sold out without a question, with the lineup we have," said Switzer.
"We have so many great acts from the Island here and they have such a strong following."
With the money going to the Canadian Red Cross, it will qualify for matching funding from the federal government.
The concert will start at 5 p.m. Jan. 29 and run until 2 a.m.
