The lights might be out at university campuses across the Maritimes over the next few weeks, but everyone will be home.
It's all part of a contest to slash energy consumption.
Students who live on campus at the University of Prince Edward Island have challenged students at other residences in the region.
Holland College, St. Francis Xavier, Mount Allison, Dalhousie and the University of New Brunswick have all agreed to take part in the competition, which started Sunday and runs until Feb. 20.
"We had run the challenge on campus here last year, just between our individual residences, and it was fairly successful," said David Taylor, manager of sustainability and energy management at UPEI.
"We were actually able to reduce our energy usage in the three residences by about 8,800 kWh, which was quite significant," he said.
"So we felt that we'd like to up the ante a little bit this year and make it a little bit more competitive and maybe make it a little bit more compelling … So we thought why don't we challenge some of the other residences in the region?"
Each of the 30 residences participating will track their weekly electrical consumption and prepare a report, said Taylor.
A "green" prize will be awarded to the winning residence.
