P.E.I. landlords get break on trash sorting

P.E.I. landlords won't have to pay penalties for dumping unsorted tenant garbage, at least not for a while.
The Island Waste Management Corporation wanted to start charging landlords up to $20 a load for unsorted waste. Landlords are the only Islanders who don't have to pay to dump unsorted waste at drop-off sites across the province.
IWMC had been looking to change its policy of not holding landlords responsible for tenants who don't sort waste. But the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission refused to allow the change, saying the corporation must consult with landlords first.
IWMC CEO Gerry Moore said unsorted waste is not a significant problem. "For the most part all Islanders, no matter where they live, have adapted to the program with very, very few exceptions," said Moore.
"When we do collect material at a home or an apartment building, for the most part it is sorted and disposed of properly."
IRAC has asked the corporation to file a report by July on how to deal with the problem of tenants refusing to sort waste.
Waste Watch, which has been in operation on the Island for almost 10 years, requires all Islanders to sort waste into defined streams for recycling, composting or dumping.
