A house fire in western P.E.I. that started when a Christmas tree burst into flames was caused either by faulty lights or proximity to a wood stove, say fire officials.
A man in Elmsdale was lucky to escape injury Wednesday evening after his Christmas tree caught fire. The Alberton fire department was called to the mobile home on Western Road shortly after 5 p.m.
Fire Captain Glen Gallant said the man was sitting in his living room when he noticed his tree on fire.
"He tried to put it out himself, but the smoke was too heavy, so he had to get out," said Gallant.
"There was nothing left of the Christmas tree. The floor, walls and ceiling around the Christmas tree were charred, heavy smoke damage."
Gallant said there are two possible causes: malfunctioning Christmas lights or a woodstove located next to the tree.
The man is now staying with relatives. It's expected his home will be able to be repaired.
