The provincial fire marshal's office is warning Islanders to not leave electric chargers plugged in for long periods of time following a house fire in Souris on Tuesday.
Investigators have determined the blaze was caused by a computer laptop charger, said Dave Blacquiere, the fire marshal.
Blacquiere believes the charger came into contact with flammable material, or that the cord may have been worn and frayed, he said.
Firefighters were called to the home on Robichaud Lane at 6:30 a.m. AT. By the time they arrived, there was little they could do and the house sustained extensive damage.
The owner, who was not home at the time, had left his laptop plugged in, said Blacquiere.
The fire marshal's office is urging people to unplug chargers once their computers and mobile devices are charged.
They should also check the cords to ensure they're in good condition and keep them clear of any combustible materials, Blacquiere said.
