Six firefighters with more than 100 years of service to the city are leaving Charlottetown's fire department.

The retirements include the department's two staff members and members of the volunteer brigade.

Coun. Melissa Hilton told CBC News on Tuesday that replacements will be selected by next week.

"We have had a volunteer recruitment drive in the fall, which we do every year, and we have actually eight new recruits, seven that will be interviewed this coming week to see if they'll be starting at the fire school this coming January," said Hilton.

These are not the first experienced firefighters Charlottetown has lost this year. Fire Chief Bill Hogan retired earlier this year after 35 years with the department.
