Summerside police are still looking for the motorist responsible for causing a large oil spill on Friday night.

Up to 700 litres of heating oil seeped out onto Harvard Street and into some storm drains after a car struck a home's outdoor tank, just before midnight.

The driver fled the scene, but police say they know who he is, Chief Dave Poirier has said.

Meanwhile, clean-up efforts continue.

"An environmental services company has been contracted and, come Monday, when disposal facilities are available, they will excavate the contaminated soil and remove that," said Ron Ryder, a spokesman for the Department of Environment.

Sand and peat moss were used to soak up some of the oil. And absorbent booms were placed in a nearby stream and at the end of a storm drain.

The oil tank had just been filled for the winter.
