A group of neighbours in Tignish has failed in its bid to have pit bull terriers banned from the western P.E.I. community.

'We wouldn't have much of a leg to stand on, I wouldn't think. Especially since the dog hasn't really caused a problem.'— community chair Elmer Arsenault

The group sent a petition to council when it discovered a neighbour was keeping one of the dogs. The neighbours were nervous about the dog getting loose, and first called the village dog catcher to investigate. The dog catcher found the animal is being kept behind an electrified fence.

Community chair Elmer Arsenault told CBC News on Monday that council understands people's concerns, because of the reputation of the breed. But he said given the struggles of other municipalities in banning dangerous breeds, council did not believe it was worth trying.

"They have to realize that it's not an easy chore to restrict certain breeds of dogs within the municipality, because the court system will frown on picking on certain breeds of dogs to eliminate," said Arsenault.

"We wouldn't have much of a leg to stand on, I wouldn't think. Especially since the dog hasn't really caused a problem."

Arsenault said representatives of council spoke to the dog owner and shared the neighbours' concerns.

Tignish does have bylaws that could be used if the dog becomes a nuisance by barking, or harassing or biting people.
