Organic growers seeking proposals from processors

Certified organic farmers on P.E.I. are looking at adding value to their produce by attracting organic food processors.
Allan Hicken, a board member of the P.E.I. Organic Producers Co-operative, told CBC News Thursday the ultimate goal is to provide more opportunities for farmers on P.E.I. at a time when many are struggling.
Hicken has already launched a company, P.E.I. Organic Fruit and Berries, but wants to expand his offerings beyond fresh produce.
"We're looking at adding value into purées and drinks and stuff like that, to add value to the blueberries," he said.
"That's just one thing but there are a number of companies across P.E.I., whether it's perhaps the dairy or perhaps processing sectors that we don't know about that might be interested in partnering and creating new opportunities."
The growers are calling for proposals for a study that will look at what's available now, and what has to happen to ensure there are more organic processing opportunities.
The deadline for submissions is Oct. 15.
