Officials with the P.E.I. Rocket junior ice hockey team are defending their decision not to discipline one of the team's players after he was charged with assault causing bodily harm.

Charlottetown native Chris Doyle, a forward who has been with the team for four years, was charged on Friday. The 19-year-old is also facing an additional charge of damage to property.

Sgt. Tom Clow of the Charlottetown Police said officers responded to a call early Friday and found a 21-year-old female victim on Queen Street.

"She was treated for a broken nose and two lacerations requiring stitches," Clow said. "We received information as to the alleged assailant — it was a Christopher Doyle."

Police said the property damaged was a laptop and a lamp.

Doyle spent the night at the Sleepy Hollow Correctional Centre and was released the next day.

P.E.I. Rocket general manager Kent Hudson defended the team's decision to continue to allow Doyle to practise and play for the team until the case goes to court.

"We obviously want to make sure that we approach this subject carefully," he said. "At the present time, we decided short-term that it would be better for Chris to play last weekend and to be with the team this week on the road.

"This isn't about Chris Doyle the hockey player, it's about Chris Doyle the person. And hopefully we can help him out to make sure that, you know, we support him in a way that will make him a better individual at the end of this process," Hudson said.

Doyle, a draft pick for the New York Rangers, was the P.E.I. Rocket's second-leading scorer last season. He was recently named assistant captain of the team, which is part of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Doyle is scheduled to be in court on Oct. 22.
