Michael Ignatieff talks to media at Summerside harbour. (CBC)Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff was in P.E.I. Friday and spent most of his time in Egmont, a traditional Liberal seat that fell to Conservative Fisheries Minister Gail Shea in the last election.
Ignatieff and the Island's three Liberal MPs — Wayne Easter, Lawrence MacAulay and Shawn Murphy — had lunch with 300 Liberal supporters in Summerside. There, Ignatieff gave a general condemnation of the Conservative government.
"We've been drifting for three and a half years. We've been sinking," he said.
"We haven't got a clear direction."
Squeaker broke Liberal stronghold
As the day went on, Ignatieff got more specific, taking aim at the Conservatives' only P.E.I. representative.
"I don't think she's done a good job for Egmont, and I don't think she's done a good job for the lobstermen, the fishermen right across the country," he said.
"We think very strongly that we can do better, and we can offer better representation."
Ignatieff's main goal on this trip was to rally supporters to Egmont to find a strong candidate to go up against Shea in an election that could come as early as this fall.
Before the last election, the riding was held by Liberal Joe McGuire for 19 years. Shea beat former Liberal premier Keith Milligan by 62 votes.
The Egmont riding has a search committee for a candidate in place, but potential candidates are waiting for Milligan to say whether he'll run again.
There are several possible new candidates, including Warren Ellis, Mat McGuire, Joe McGuire's son, and former party president Brenda Hackett.
Milligan said he'll make his decision within two weeks.
