Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart was acclaimed as president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities over the weekend.

The official ceremony will be held Monday during the federation's annual conference in Whistler, B.C.

The federation represents close to 1,800 municipalities across the country. Stewart noted the federation does important work that can bring direct benefits to Summerside. For example, he noted the federation had lobbied for federal gas tax money to be shared with municipalities, and Summerside receives hundreds of thousands of dollars from that program.

The federation is also lobbying to get infrastructure funds rolling out to projects.

Stewart takes over from Jean Perrault, the mayor of Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Stewart, one of Canada's longest serving mayors, was first elected in 1985.
