P.E.I.'s environment minister says he plans to eventually introduce new laws to limit nuisance noise.

The move comes after the provincial department received complaints from people who live near wind turbines and a motocross park.

Environment Minister Richard Brown said he's a strong believer in people being able to enjoy the peace and quiet of their homes.

He told CBC News he's prepared to outlaw any repeated noise measuring higher than 45 decibels.

"You know, I'm looking at if there's [an] activity or an event happening and it continues to be happening and continues to be a nuisance to the neighbourhood, then that's one of the remedies we have — to ask the event to either move its location or to construct or to do something to lower its sound levels," he said.

Failure to respect the proposed guidelines would mean a fine, Brown said.

Forty-five decibels is similar to the sound of a kitchen refrigerator.

The Environment Department is still developing the proposed guidelines.
