A group of Charlottetown residents is continuing the fight to stop construction of a cellphone tower on Mount Edward Road.

Last week, the federal government ordered the City of Charlottetown to issue a building permit allowing Rogers Wireless to erect the tower.

City councillors said they are powerless to stop the project, which meets all regulations, according to Industry Canada.

But local residents are still concerned, and are signing a petition, said Catherine Mullally, who lives near the cellphone tower site.

"This issue is a health issue as far as we're concerned," she said. "And we feel Industry Canada is out of line in requiring the City of Charlottetown to issue a building permit, which they did."

Mullally said the petition will be presented to Health Minister Doug Currie during a public rally at the sisters of Saint-Martha Convent.
