Visitors to P.E.I. can now check out the inspection records of accommodations online before they arrive on the Island, but they won't find it on the province's tourism website.
'This is not the type of usual marketing information that's on marketing websites.'— Janet Wood, Tourism PEI
It has taken some time for the province to post the inspections. They were first made public in October 2007, after an access to information request by CBC News. Last fall, the government said it was facing technical difficulties in getting the information online.
"Government spent a lot of time and money to meet this request," Janet Wood, manager of product development for the Department of Tourism, said in November.
"We're trying to set this site up in a professional, accessible way so that it will be easy for visitors, the media and the tourist industry to access this information."
The latest report shows most of the 1,600 places on P.E.I. pass inspection: there are some problems, ranging from dirty sinks to need for paint to holes in the wall. While the inspection reports are now online, they are not linked to the Department of Tourism's marketing page.
"This is not the type of usual marketing information that's on marketing websites," said Wood.
"This is another level of detail and it's more tied to our regulatory process."
Instead of going on the Tourism website, the inspections are on the main government page, under Strategy, Evaluation and Industry Investment, then Product Development, Licences and Signage.
