Delays for people nominated by the P.E.I. government to get their landed immigrant status could be even longer than the province's auditor general has warned, Citizenship Immigration Canada says.
Last week, Auditor General Colin Younker warned that people looking to immigrate to P.E.I. could face a wait of two to four years. This week, Innovation Minister Allan Campbell said he had assurances the wait would only be about 18 months.
In an email to CBC News Thursday, however, CIC said those immigrant investors could be facing a five-year wait. CIC said P.E.I. nominated about 1,800 potential immigrants in 2008, instead of the expected 1,000, and that will mean long delays in processing.
Campbell said he is waiting for accurate projections from the federal government, and he still does not believe the waits will be that long.
CIC has asked the province to warn the immigrant investors about the long waits, but Campbell doesn't believe that is warranted. CIC said if the province does not provide a written warning about the waits, it will.
