Following a request from P.E.I.'s Abegweit First Nation, the federal and provincial governments have reached an agreement to provide the band with an RCMP officer.
Chief Brian Francis told CBC News Thursday the officer will be based on the Scotchfort reserve, north of Charlottetown, but will also be responsible for policing in the nearby Rocky Point and Morell Rear reserves.
Francis said many First Nations communities across the country, including the Lennox Island band on P.E.I., have dedicated RCMP officers. He believes having an officer specifically assigned to the band will create stronger, safer communities.
"We would prefer to have an aboriginal member. But at the same time, we want the best person for the job, whether they be aboriginal, non-aboriginal," said Francis.
"It's important that they're able to relate to our community needs, and we feel that is the most important priority."
The officer will perform regular duties with an emphasis on community relations, including school liaison, senior safety programs and other priorities determined by the band.
The RCMP has started the hiring process for the position.
