Charlottetown police handed out 22 tickets over the weekend in an effort to stop loud parties in an area across the street from the UPEI campus.

Deputy chief Richard Collins told CBC News Monday the force decided to blitz Brown's Court after three weeks of complaints about behaviour of tenants and visitors to the area. Collins said the area is developing a reputation as a party spot, and people not living there are showing up looking for a good time.

"We ended up charging 22 people with alcohol-related offences, and we ended up charging someone in relation to [having a] noisy party and a highway traffic offence. We're going to keep that presence up until we feel the situation is manageable."

The party complaints are tying up officers who should be patrolling the city, Collins said. On one night last weekend, three police cars and five officers spent more than an hour trying to calm down partiers.

The landlords who own properties are co-operating with police efforts to try to quiet down the neighbourhood, police said.
