Compensation offered by the province to growers for crops ruined by wet weather is too low, says the P.E.I. Potato Board.

'We do not wish to stand in the way of any form of help.'— Kevin MacIsaac, P.E.I. Potato Board

August rainfall was triple the normal level, then the soggy ground had 90 millimetres of rain dumped on it by post-tropical storm Hanna. Many potato fields were left under water.

The directors of the P.E.I. Potato Board met Monday with agriculture officials to talk about how much money growers can expect in compensation. Board chair Kevin MacIsaac told CBC News on Tuesday that the directors were not impressed with the numbers the province delivered.

"They had a proposal which they presented to us and asked us for our opinion on it. Our opinion was that it was probably a bit on the low side," said MacIsaac.

"However, we do not wish to stand in the way of any form of help that is coming to some growers, so now it's up to them to announce the kind of program they are going to do."

MacIsaac is hoping the government will take the board's concerns into consideration before announcing a final compensation deal. Provincial agriculture officials describe the negotiations as ongoing.
