Charlottetown police are staying busy with the Festival of Lights on the waterfront.

On Saturday night police laid 30 liquor-related charges, and a further 15 were laid Sunday. In addition, police have laid nine charges under the Criminal Code and six under the Highway Traffic Act.

Thirty-six people spent a night at the Sleepy Hollow jail in connection with the Canada Day weekend festival.

Mayor Clifford Lee told CBC News Monday he expected the zero tolerance policy implemented for last year's festival would have made a difference.

"A lot of these situations people were just told keep on moving. We've taken a different approach; we're now taking people to Sleepy Hollow for the night," said Lee.

"Charges are being laid, and quite honestly I would have thought that would have made much more of an impact than it obviously has."

The future of the festival in the downtown still appears to be up in the air. Earlier this year, city council refused to give organizers of the festival a two-year contract, saying it wanted to see how this year's event is handled.

The final concert of this year's festival, featuring the Tragically Hip, takes place Monday night. On Tuesday night, there will be another night of waterfront activities, culminating in a fireworks display.
