The ad campaign encourages people to treat tourists as their own guests. (CBC)The Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I. has launched a campaign to remind Islanders about the importance of tourism to the provincial economy and to encourage them to be friendly to visitors this summer.
The series of newspaper ads put out by the TIAPEI featuring prominent Islanders is designed to make locals think about the economic and cultural importance of tourism to the province.
"It is basically an awareness campaign about, let's face it, the value of tourism and the value of visitors to Prince Edward Island," TIAPEI executive director Don Cudmore told CBC News Tuesday.
"It's important that people acknowledge the fact that when we have extra visitors or extra people around the province, that it's important that we say hello to them and treat them in a friendly and courteous way."
The ads explain that tax dollars generated by the tourism industry have a direct impact on services Islanders enjoy, such as schools and hospitals. Cudmore said the tourism industry generated $356 million in revenue last year, and $36 million in provincial taxes.
"If you understand exactly what is done with the money that [tourists are] spending, it helps Islanders to understand how important it is," he said.
The ad campaign was developed in conjunction with National Tourism Month.
