The P.E.I. board in charge of childcare is investigating a Charlottetown daycare after a two-year-old girl wandered away from the facility Friday and was found in a nearby mall.

Carolyn Simpson, with the Department of Education and an inspector with the provincial child care facilities board, said an investigation is underway at Sherwood Daycare.

"[We are] working very closely with the owner and the program supervisor, and you know we're there to absolutely see that the act is enforced."

Simpson said she can't discuss the specifics of this case, but in similar investigations, inspectors look at certification levels, programs and safety.

The board will meet next week to look over the results of the investigation and determine what action should be taken, said Simpson.

In most cases, the board and the daycare operators work together to make any necessary changes, she said.

However, in extreme cases, where there is an unwillingness to co-operate, a licence can be removed.
