Charlottetown police released a composite sketch Friday of a person of interest in the investigation of the killing of Byron Carr in 1988.

Policed reopened the investigation last fall. It is the only unsolved homicide on P.E.I. in recent years.

Carr, a 36-year-old school teacher, was strangled and stabbed to death in the bedroom of his home on a quiet street in Charlottetown.

Carr was gay, and the gay community on P.E.I. in the late 1980s was close and tight-lipped. But police now hope people who may have been reluctant to talk about their association with Carr in 1988 may be more willing to talk now.

The sketch is of a man who is alleged to have attacked a gay man in Charlottetown two months after the Carr death. It is a likeness of how the man would have appeared in 1988.

There was no sign of a break-in at the house, leading police to believe Carr knew his killer, even if only casually.

Police were also hopeful advances in DNA technology could lead to a breakthrough in the case.
