The freeze in property tax assessments is giving Prince Edward Islanders a further break this year by delaying the sending out of tax bills.

The freeze was one of the promises of the Liberal government elected last May, and now it turns out Islanders will not only see no municipal tax increases this year, but administering the freeze has slowed down getting bills out.

"There's been a slight delay in the production of the real property assessment notices and property charges for 2008," provincial tax commissioner Jim Ramsay told CBC News Friday.

"We have asked government to allow the mailing to be extended to the 28th of May."

The first installment on municipal tax is normally due at the end of May, but given the lateness of the bill mailing, the province has extended that to June 20.
