Help for younger children, special education, school lunches and new teachers announced in the P.E.I. budget has made the P.E.I. Teacher's Federation happy.

Federation president Phyllis Horne told CBC News Thursday that putting more money into the Best Start program, an education program for young families, will pay off when kids get to school, and $100,000 more for breakfast programs will also help in the classroom.

The federation was also glad to hear there will be six new teaching positions, but says it would always like to have more.

"It's better than the alternative. We're always looking for new positions, and we hope that that will get the ball rolling," said Horne.

"We also have a lot of needs in the area of students with special needs.… those students are all in our classrooms. So teachers are facing a lot of challenges in day-to-day classrooms."

Government plans to spend an additional $540,000 on special education and $752,000 for literacy programs.
