Charlottetown city council has set aside $50,000 to study traffic flow on University Avenue between UPEI and the Charlottetown Mall.

Finance chair Cecil Villard told CBC News on Monday it's possible that part of the avenue could be widened.

"That's always an option, of course. We will be looking at developing a plan for the future of what that part of University Avenue is going to look like," said Villard.

"We are putting $50,000 aside to begin to look at a study to help us better understand what we need to do to create a better situation for traffic and for pedestrians on University Avenue."

Traffic is regularly clogged on that section of the avenue, and council is concerned the planned development of a new Canada Games sports field at UPEI could worsen the problem.

Another study in the same area of town will look at improving safety for pedestrians crossing University Avenue between the Browns Court subdivision and UPEI.
